Pattern Research
Today we were asked to do some research on a variety of websites, looking for one website with a good pattern design and another with a good texture design that caught my eye.Firstly, I researched a website called http://www.impressivework.com/ my first thoughts of the website were that it was very simple. Although designs with a lot of depth and detail are sometimes good when created and put together well, but, simple designs that are structured well also catch my eye.
The pattern included in this website has most likely been influenced by Victorian styled wallpaper. The great thing about the design is that they have managed to make it scale with the rest of the website, making it look new and creative. Another thing I really like about this website that gives it that "creative" look is simply the colour of the title, "Impressive" the use of that bright pink really stands out and works well with the grey layout of the rest of the website.
Texture Research
After searching many websites that include a great texture within their design or simply just the background I found this website, http://www.bernunlimited.com/ the website sells skating and snowboarding equipment.
The texture included in this website is very creative and different to a lot of other sites I looked at, the texture is based on a retro, ripped cardboard design which conveys well with what the website has to offer. The texture was probably created using more than one layers to show in depth, underneath and overlapping of the cardboard to make it look like it's been ripped. The standard brown colour of the cardboard also helps to bring out and create a strong effect on the blue/dark blue parts of the design. Another great thing about this design is that it interacts with the navigational buttons and tabs included in the website.
Animation Research
Aardman Animations
Aardman Animations, Ltd., also known as Aardman Studios, or simply as Aardman, is a British animation studio based in Bristol, United Kingdom. The studio is known for films made using stop-motion clay animation techniques, particularly those featuring Plasticine characters Wallace and Gromit. However, it successfully entered the computer animation market with Flushed Away 2006.
Their multi-award winning productions are novel, entertaining, brilliantly characterized and full of charm that reflects the unique talent, energy and personal commitment of the very special people who make up the Aardman team.
Aardman animations have featured in many different television series and films such as,
Chicken Run - 2000
Wallace & Gromit - The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit 2005
Flushed Away - 2006
Creature Comforts 2003-2007
Shaun The Sheep - 2007-2010
Timmy Time 2009
Wallace And Gromit's World of Invention - 2010
Pixar Animations
Pixar Animation Studios is an american computer animation film studio based in Eneryville in California. The studio itself have earned 26 Academy awards, seven golden globes and three grammy awards and it's films have made over $6.3 billion.
Pixar is best known for it's CGI-animated feature films created with Photorealistic Renderman, it's own implementation of the industry-standard Renderman image-rendering application programming interface used to generate high-quality images.
Unlike Aardman Animations, Pixar have featured in many different films but not so much television series such as,
Toy Story - 1995
A Bug's Life - 1998
Toy Story 2 - 1999
Monsters Inc - 2001
Finding Nemo - 2003
The Incredibles - 2004
Cars - 2006
Ratatouille - 2007
WALL-E - 2008
Up - 2009
Toy Story 3 (to date, the highest grossing animated film of all time, grossing over $1 billion) - 2010
Cars 2 - 2011
Creating the 'Monsters, Inc.' Characters
Monsters Inc was one of my favourite animated films that I watched when I was younger and iv'e wondered how they made it, seeing as it's a really good animation. Multiple elements went into creating the characters in "Monsters, Inc." In this section, we'll examine this painstaking process.
Clay sculptures of the faces were created and digitized for the main characters, nearly 50 other miscellaneous monsters were formed in the computer from a kit of virtual parts. Learning from their experience on previous Pixar projects, the two "Toy Story" films and "A Bug's Life," the modelers used a proprietary program called "Geppetto" to add more controls, allowing the animators more subtle movements.
David Carson Analysis
David Carson is an American graphic designer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun. Carson was perhaps the most influential graphic designer of the 1990's.
He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954. Carsons first contact with graphics design was made in 1980 at the university of Arizona on a two week graphics course. He attended San Diego State University as well as Oregon College of Commercial Art. Later he was traching high school sociology in Del Mar California when he went to Switzerland, where he attended a three-week workshop in graphics design as part of his degree.
Shepard Fairey, usually accompanied by the word "OBEY". Fairey stated in the film that he liked the idea of people seeing this face and statement everywhere, and wondering what it meant - talking about its origins and spreading the word of his art just through that one, recognisable face.
Banksy is a British graffiti artist and prankster. He was inspired by local artists and his work was part of the larger Bristol underground scene with Nick Walker, Inkie and 3D - His art addresses various cultural and social issues such as commercialism in society, government surveillance of citizens, and violence in society.
Some of his graffiti is simply graffiti about graffiti and society’s response to it. Often his art presents contrasting images such as a clash between police and innocence, a fusion of religious icons with consumerism, or unexpected images such as the protestor shown here who is poised to throw a bouquet of flowers rather than a rock or malakoff cocktail.
The piece of graffiti art below gives an example of how children in other parts of the world are living in a lot poorer conditions, whereas the two people being towed by the child who are supposedly tourists are shown as being lazy and greedy and not worrying about anyone else but themselves.
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Using edited footage from a street artist named Mr. Brainwash, who started his career by first filming street artists for years - and then finally, from his experiences with the street artist Banksy, decided to take to the art scene himself and set himself up with his own gallery. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows "Mr. Brainwash"'s story as he develops from amateur film-maker to a street artist making millions. Through the documentary, we see how street artists create their work, and the reasoning behind some of the most famous pieces from known street artists today. Cutting paper and making stencils, using spray paints or just slapping paint onto their chosen piece of wall in their city, there was numerous ways for an up-and-coming artist to make their work.
DSLR Camera Induction
Today we were given a demo on how to hold and use a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) in the correct manor. We started with an induction on the Nikon D40, learning about how to hold the camera and where the buttons and zoom/focus is.
We then moved onto learning about how lighting and lenses work with the camera by covering,
Aperture - the amount of light let into the lens
Shutter Speed - the amount of time the shutter is open for
ISO - measures the sensitivity of the image sensor
Research Three Pieces of Art/Design
Digital Image
Gary Tonge
This is one of my favourite images by Gary Tonge, the piece is called Basilica, it is a fantasy based landscape. The artist has chose to create a fantasy based landscape with surreal assets included that give the image a mindblowing, futuristic feel. The artist has created an in-depth perspective view of what appears to be some sort of futuristic city with a view leading onto the horizon which creates a strong visual effect for the viewer, the artist has also used shadows and mist to help emphasise the perspective view. He has created the mist using the brush tool in Photoshop with a lowered opacity that scales according to the surroundings, also the clouds within the sky along with the sunrays were most likely created using this technique. Most of the shadows in this image were created using the burn tool which gives a great effect when using on a large scale to create shadows behind cliffs, mountains and buildings. The artist has used these techniques well to help keep the viewers eyes searching further into the distance, in fact, if you look closely you will notice that the city is continued on the left hand side of the image. Looking at that, you will also notice that the artist has involved a great amount of detail in the image - towards the left hand side the artist has created a dock with boats by the sea.
This is another example of how Gary Tonge creates perspective views with the help of shadows, glares and mist to emphasise the effect.
The artist has used a great colour scheme for the image, the strong radiant orange has created the perfect sunset which helps add emphasise on the dramatic appearance of a futuristic time. the artist has used a variation of colouring techniques to create the final glow, im guessing that the use of variables was involved to create a gental orange/yellow tint once the final image was composed. The position of the sunset also helps highlight the way the artist has chosen to display it. The artist may have used the clone stamp tool to clear up areas which were unwanted, such as mountains and perhaps the river leading around the mountain. Also the use of many other tools were most likely involved such as the blur tool to help layers compliment each other
and also the dodge tool to help the sunrays blend in with the enviroment on buildings and in the sky.
Traditional Image
This is a line drawing that was produced by an artist called Bart Sears. The drawing was made for a poster for the comic series, Judge Dredd. The drawing is a different version to the original designs for the comic series but with the same style of drawing, which I like. The drawing has a lot of different shading in areas to show where light hits the costume on the character. The amount of detail involved in this drawing on the armour, espescially around the shoulders, gloves and helmet is very large compared to earlier sketches. I also like the way the artist has emphasised size on the knee pads, it gives the image a feeling of a cartoon style.
Image Of My Choice
This is a traditional image that was taken (created) by german artists Jan Wollert and Jorg Miedza. The technique used to create this image is long exposure, using various LED and strobe lights, the subject created a trail of full circle spin movements and repeated it over and over. To create such a fine, smooth light, also taking into account the time they needed to create the circles, i'm guessing the shutter speed was around 10-15 seconds.
The colour scheme they used for this image is what caught my eye, the lights themselves have created a reflected green background which really helps emphasise the room and it's surroundings, such as the wood scattered on the floor at the end of the lights, but at the same time it creates a gloomy and dull effect which in my opinion helps bring out a more sci-fi part of this image. The tone of the lights help convey the way the image is created, the lights start off as very dark which a low opacity then gradually begin to become lighter as if time has past by to help brighten it up.
